Digital Artefact Creation

As a group, we decided to research the topic of Surveillance Capitalism for our digital artefact. We were inspired to explore the topic by a TedTalk given by Professor Shoshana Zuboff and decided to share our research in order to spread awareness and warn others about the implications of Surveillance Capitalism online. We chose to present our research in the form of a short, animated video, as we felt that a video could be both informative and engaging and could resonate with a wide range of people.

We included both visual and audio elements in our video to cater to multiple learning styles and focused on a single, personalised narrative to ensure that the abstract topic of Surveillance Capitalism could become more tangible and accessible to our audience. The simple narrative exhibited in our video condensed our research in a way that a podcast or webpage could not, as the visual elements allowed us to avoid dense text or overwhelming information.

The result of our artefact is largely successful. Our original goal to provide our audience with a general understanding of the system and dangers of Surveillance Capitalism was achieved. We did come across some challenges during the process of making our animation, as the paywall present within our chosen animation software, Powtoon, did limit the animation features available to us. However, we are still happy with the final result.

My role in this project was to display my group’s research and animation in presentation form, to aid us in talking through our workflow and reflections on the project. First, I outlined the structure of our presentation with a rough script, before gathering screengrabs from our animation, images, and visual prompts for the topics that we wanted to cover. I believe that my contribution to this project was successful in tying together the previous contributions of my colleagues and presenting our project in a clear and effective manner.
